What twenty years does to a built-in

• Door gaskets take a compression set. The magnet still pulls, but the profile no longer springs back, so the seal is holding on the last millimetre of squash. • Fan bearings wear. Condenser and evaporator fans are the two motors that never stop, and a dry bearing announces itself as a noise long before it announces itself as a temperature complaint. • Electrolytic capacitors on control boards dry out. It is a well-understood ageing mechanism, and it is why we test the supply and the board’s behaviour under load rather than swapping parts hopefully.
• Hinge closers lose their spring. The door stops pulling itself shut over the last inch, which nobody notices until the compartment is warm.
• Ice maker molds crack and harvest arms stiffen. On a machine of this age the fill valve, mold and harvest mechanism are usually replaced as a set, because doing one at a time means three visits.

Repair or replace, honestly

Built-in equipment is worth repairing far past the point where a freestanding machine would not be, and the reason is the cabinetry. A column refrigerator or a stacked oven pair was fitted into a specific opening with specific clearances and a specific panel treatment, so replacing it frequently means joinery work as well as an appliance. That changes the arithmetic: a repair that would be marginal on a freestanding unit is often clearly worthwhile here.

There is still a limit, and we will say when a machine has reached it. The signals are a cabinet needing two or more major components at once, a sealed system fault on a unit already well past its second decade, or a part that is no longer produced for that serial range. What we ask before we arrive
